Leading Your Company With Compassion

Leading compassionately.

Where did Compassionate leadership (CL) stem from and what is it?

CL gained popularity in the early 21st century, particularly in the 2010s and 2020s, as societal expectations, workplace changes, and scientific understanding evolved. In comparison, CL is rooted in earlier movements like humanistic management and servant leadership of the 1970s and 1980s, it was further shaped by the rise of mindfulness and emotional intelligence, both of which emphasised empathy and self-awareness.

An increasing focus on mental health highlighted the need for leaders to support employees’ emotional well-being and create psychologically safe environments. This shift from command-and-control style of leadership to a people-centred leadership style demonstrated that compassion, empathy, and understanding actually foster higher engagement and productivity from staff.

Leaders who display and embrace compassion also strongly align with diversity and inclusion efforts, this is due to the fact that compassionate leaders helped create inclusive environments and address inequalities in their work place. Neuroscience also helped to drive this trend, along with the rise in workplace burnout, and a search for meaning and purpose in work that has stemmed from disillusioned staff.

My own increasing awareness of Compassionate Leadership was highlighted throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the company I was with at the time displayed high levels of compassion from the top down, looking out for staff welfare and ensuring we were kept as safe as possible. Covid accelerated the trend and has highlighted the need for emotional support amid health concerns and remote working practices. Social movements, such as Black Lives Matter that were advocating for justice and equality further emphasised the need for empathetic leadership. Thought leaders, authors, and academic programs played a significant role in popularising compassionate leadership, therefore embedding it in modern management practices.

How then can compassionate leaders and compassionate organisations foster organisational culture of care and well-being?

Workplace well-being has expanded from a focus on safety, to a holistic approach which includes physical, mental, emotional, and social health, a shift that has been driven by increased mental health awareness, along with the wellness industry’s influence, and increased evidence via research that links well-being to productivity.

Global events like the financial crises and the COVID-19 pandemic have accelerated a focus on well-being, thus highlighting just how important mental health, flexibility, and employee support is.

Organisations like the World Health organisation (WHO), regulatory pressures, and thought leaders have further promoted workplace well-being as an essential for organisational success and social responsibility.
